BISHOP AUCKLAND – ON THE MAP

This project’s core objective was to highlight the beauty of the town including Bishop Auckland’s rich historical past, its very exciting present and even looking forward into a bright future. Gillian led workshops involving people from all parts of the community and many schools, creating individual drawings of buildings, cultural landmarks, people, items and objects to bring Bishop Auckland to life in a new and artistic way. The greatest part about the map, was the people who made it, this is a map for the community and town that has been made by hundreds of people living within its borders.

CORE OBJECTIVES

Gillian has been leading workshops involving people from all parts of the community and many schools, creating individual drawings of buildings, cultural landmarks, people, items and objects to bring Bishop Auckland to life in a new and artistic way. Access to the CAMPAIGN

 

Gillian really wanted to find a way to make sure as many residents in Bishop Auckland as possible have access to the map and this project. She has taken out a full A4 page in The Bishop Press which will be used to feature a section of the map. The scale of the map however, is huge, and to truly appreciate it in its entirety you can view it hanging in the Gillian Arnold Boutique shop on Fore Bondgate where it will be hung on fabric stretching at least 3 meters wide. The Map will be published in The Bishop Press on their 15th of July edition with an editorial on the project and will be hanging in the Gillian Arnold Boutique throughout the summer when Kynren is on and long into Christmas.

BISHOP AUCKLAND – UP IN LIGHTS

Up In Lights was a highly engaging map project that evolved some of the work already created through On The Map to generate a wealth of new content to create a 3-dimensional lit up structure of Bishop Auckland made entirely out of handmade lanterns. The core aim of this new project is to further develop awareness in the town of the local amenities and improvements that are being provided by institutions such as County Durham Council, Kynren, Auckland Castle Trust, The Town Team and the hundreds of local businesses that are remaining open and doing very well. We also created an aesthetic craft orientated map that pinpointed the locations of where all the participants are from within Bishop Auckland and the visitors to the gallery space to show how many people were interacting with the project from within the town and how far people travelled from to reach Bishop Auckland.

Like our previous “On The Map” project, Up In Lights will be a highly inclusive project that seeks to engage with a wide spectrum of people from a range of diverse backgrounds and ages. Up In Lights will be an impressionistic visual beacon, created by the people who live in the town. In the process of creating the hundreds of buildings they will learn new skills in teamwork, artistic creation, confidence and develop a better understanding of the changes happening in the town. This style of workshop promotes communication between the public and the organisations helping to shape the town and provides a platform for unheard citizens to voice their concerns and air their grievances which can in turn benefit decision makers by making more informed decisions that include public
opinion.


 

GILLIAN’S PAST EXPERIENCE

 

Gillian’s first pilot project On The Map has been an incredible success that has brought together hundreds of people in the town to create a unique perspective of cultural engagement and solidified her resolve to run future projects through Pineapple Castle. The aims of the project to engage with schools, businesses and social groups has been succeeded with hundreds of people engaging with Gillian at workshops. Beyond that we have seen great crowdsourcing effect happen with people taking their time to create work for the map, devote their time to helping us edit and helping to promote and share the content throughout social media and news outlets.
